School's out and kids are hungry
School Days, Lunch Trays, and Gourmets highlights summer meal programs across NH
CONCORD - Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut today premiered the latest episode of "School Days, Lunch Trays, and Gourmets", the Department web series that highlights the hard work of school nutrition workers throughout the Granite State. The fourth installment shines a spotlight on summer meal programs in Farmington, Franklin, and Franconia, showing how much work goes into making sure New Hampshire kids have tasty, nutritious meals throughout the summer.
In the episode, Edelblut packs lunches for kids at the Valley View Community School in Farmington, makes chicken salad for kids in Franklin, and picks fresh vegetables from the garden at Copper Cannon Camp in Franconia.
"Many New Hampshire families rely on school nutrition programs, and that need does not go away during the summer," Edelblut says. "We’re happy to highlight the hard work of the many volunteers, school districts, and non-profit groups across New Hampshire that provide summer meals for Granite State kids."
The New Hampshire Department of Education facilitates summer meal programs at more than 100 New Hampshire locations. These programs are funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. New Hampshire Department of Education staff identify areas in need of summer meals, and work with local non-profits and schools to help the programs meet federal requirements.
