Pathfinding course to provide students with career guidance

Aiding youth with disabilities

CONCORD, NH — The New Hampshire Department of Education (NHED) has partnered with Major Choice to offer mentor-driven guidance to students while they explore various education and career opportunities.

Major Choice’s mentorship component is unique, especially for students with disabilities, work challenges, an Individualized Education Program or 504 plan. The mentorship program employs seasoned educators with expertise in education, social work or special education who use teaching techniques to build students’ confidence and belief in themselves and their future.

The Pathfinding courseware, which is now available through NHED’s Vocational Rehabilitation (VR), provides a structured, step-by-step approach to determining the path forward for students ages 16-24, whether eligible or potentially eligible for VR services.

“Assisting students with disabilities with a comprehensive process to determine what career pathway they will choose is the cornerstone of VR’s work,” said Lisa Hinson-Hatz, VR director. “It is our goal to guide students toward a bright and prosperous future. This program will help teens and young adults create happy and fulfilling lives, and we are excited about its possibilities.”

The course is completed over a 6-10 week period and consists of 28 exercises and three missions – self exploration, career exploration and outreach. To graduate from Major Choice, students must identify their next steps and path forward, which could include a college degree, apprenticeship, vocational program or career.

“We are thrilled to partner with the New Hampshire Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation to bring our mentor-driven Pathfinding courseware to more students in the state,” said Brad Duquette, Major Choice co-founder. “Our program helps students navigate the challenges they face and find clarity and purpose in their path forward.”
