High school graduates earn NH Seal of Biliteracy distinction

CONCORD, NH — The New Hampshire Department of Education is pleased to announce that 88 recent high school graduates from 17 schools have earned the prestigious New Hampshire Seal of Biliteracy award.

The NH Seal of Biliteracy award program recognizes students who have attained a high level of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing in one or more languages, in addition to English. This year’s cohort of 88 students – the most to receive the annual award since its implementation in the Granite State in 2021 – studied numerous languages including Italian, Spanish, Turkish, French, Mandarin, Filipino, Russian, Korean, German, Vietnamese, Bosnian, Portuguese, Chinese, Arabic, Indonesian and Norwegian.

“This program has gained substantial momentum in the past several years, emphasizing that New Hampshire students recognize the importance of rich cultural and linguistic assets,” said Frank Edelblut, education commissioner. “These students understand the numerous values and benefits of bilingualism, and I am confident that their foreign language studies will serve them well as they move on to a college setting or join the workforce. Many post-secondary schools recognize this great achievement and offer world language credits to students who earn this high distinction.”

To achieve the distinction students must: 
•    Complete all of the English language requirements for high school graduation
•    Demonstrate proficiency in a world language through one of 23 approved world language assessments, or through a portfolio demonstration.
