Educators to receive stipend for accelerating New Hampshire’s literacy learning
CONCORD, NH — Elementary and early childhood educators will be awarded a stipend for helping New Hampshire children build a strong foundation to literacy.
On Wednesday, the Governor and Executive Council approved $956,340 in federal funds to be distributed as stipends to eligible participants of the Lexia LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling) two-year training for elementary educators and one-year training for early childhood educators.
“These educators are working diligently to empower our youngest children to read proficiently, and they are spending their valuable free time advancing and integrating the science of reading so that New Hampshire can accelerate literacy learning for all students,” said Frank Edelblut, education commissioner. “Understanding that this is a rigorous and intense program, we are pleased to be able to offer this stipend incentive, which will ultimately benefit reading outcomes for today’s youth.”
Elementary educators are eligible to receive a $1,000 stipend and early childhood educators are eligible to receive a $500 stipend upon receiving a mastery level score of 80 percent, as well as other completion requirements.
These courses of study, which have been available to New Hampshire educators since November 2022, will be offered through September 2024. Educators will be eligible for a stipend payment according to the internal New Hampshire Department of Education stipend policy, which includes a passing grade on unit testing, employment verification, tax documentation and more. To date, about 2,468 individuals are already enrolled or have enrolled for a future phase of the Lexia LETRS program in New Hampshire.
Anyone who works with young and emerging readers, including parents, caregivers, grandparents, early childhood and elementary educators and administrators, are invited to register for a Lexia LETRS course. More details are available at lexialearning.com/newhampshire-letrs.
