Edelblut congratulates U.S. Senate Youth Program Students

Nashua South and Exeter seniors will go to D.C. and receive $10,000 College Scholarship

CONCORD - Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut today announced his selection of Nashua South Senior George Eid and Exeter Senior Sawyer Rogers to participate in the 2020 U.S. Senate Youth Program.

The two students will join Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan in Washington, D.C. for the 58th annual USSYP Washington Week, March 7-14, 2020. Each will also receive a $10,000 scholarship for undergraduate study. Edelblut selected Eid and Rogers from students nominated by teachers and principals across the state. They will represent the Granite State in an intensive week-long study of the federal government.

George Eid, a senior at Nashua High School South, serves as a student representative on the Nashua School Board. He is president of the Student Senate, National Honor Society, Teenage Republicans Club, French Honor Society, and Social Studies Honor Society. He is currently ranked #1 in the senior class and is a National AP Scholar, on track to complete 14 AP courses by graduation. He is also active in soccer, tennis, and ski club.

Sawyer Rogers, a senior at Exeter High School, serves as a representative on his school's Student Body. He is a leader among his peers and within his community. Sawyer has served as class president all four years and has been an executive board member of the Exeter High School Student Senate for the past two years. Sawyer is an Eagle Scout and has been recognized as the New Hampshire Eagle Scout of the Year by the Sons of the American Revolution and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Currently enrolled in the Virtual Learning Academy Charter School Early College Program through Southern New Hampshire University, Sawyer is on track to receive an associate degree this spring.

Tatum Metzler from Pinkerton Academy and Kyle Duffy from Timberlane Regional High School have been chosen as alternates to this year’s program.

“The U.S. Senate Youth Program provides a chance for high school students to look inside our federal government,” Edelblut said. “I’m sure George and Sawyer will take advantage of that opportunity and represent New Hampshire proudly.”

The scholarships and all travel expenses for Washington Week are provided by the Hearst Foundations, which has fully funded the program since its creation in 1962. More than 5,700 students have participated including U.S. Sens. Susan Collins and Cory Gardner and Presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg.
