Computer Science, Minimum Standards, Discussed In December
The New Hampshire Department of Education is hosting sessions for educators and the public on Dec. 6, and Dec. 12, to gather input concerning digital skills educational content.
CONCORD – The New Hampshire Department of Education (NH DOE) will be hosting two working sessions to discuss with educators, administrators, and the public, the state's new computer science minimum standards. Computer science and digital skills requirements were added to student educational content in June 2018. The approval of HB 1674 by the Legislature and Gov. Chris Sununu requires the NH DOE to undergo a rulemaking process to add computer science to the minimum standards for public school approval.
The meetings will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018, and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, in Room 15 of Londergan Hall at the NH DOE, 101 Pleasant St. in Concord.
"Any time we can encourage students to gain valuable 21st Century skills such as computer programming capability, everyone in the state comes out ahead," commented Frank Edelblut, the commissioner of the NH DOE.
In May and June 2018, NH DOE officials held six meetings around the state to hear from stakeholders about the new standards. Feedback from those meetings was worked into the new proposal. Before presenting the draft of the new standards to the State Board of Education for approval, the December meetings will be held to gather more input and, if necessary, update the draft proposal.
The Dec. 6, and Dec. 12, sessions will be split into three parts: A presentation and discussion of the current draft of the Ed 306 changes and the legislative imperative for the changes; a section where participants can discuss the draft changes in small groups and suggest changes or edits to the current draft; and then, a whole group discussion of draft changes to the Ed 306 rules.
